First Event....Uneventful

So, I was very excited to have my first Avon event, which was actually just the garage sale I have every year during the National Road Festival, or "Pike Days," as we locals call it. But since I just started selling Avon in March, I thought it would be a great addition to my sale.

To prepare, I bought a LOT of inventory over several campaigns. I stocked up on Skin So Soft, Bug Guard, Bubble Bath, Perfumed Skin Softeners, Moisture Therapy, Shower Gels, and Foot Works. I'm still in KickStart, so I got 40% off of all of these. I ordered lots of brochures. Bought the tablecloth from Town and Country. Made up a couple of nice gift baskets and a raffle basket.

Over three days, I sold two Glimmersticks, a Skin-So-Soft spray, and a shower gel. BUT, I gave away lots of books, got 20 people's contact information from my raffle giveaway, and probably gained four or five future customers.

The weather did not cooperate this year, as it was cold and damp almost the entire weekend. The forecast called for thunderstorms every day, which kept people from coming out. Overall, the crowds were not even close to last year.

This was a learning experience. Although it was fun, it was not very profitable. Luckily I have another event, a vendor fair, coming up in three weeks. But for anyone about to have their first Avon event, I would offer the following advice:
  1. Don't overbuy inventory. Have a few of the "favorites" on hand - Skin So Soft, Bug Guard, Bubble Bath, maybe a couple of the classic fragrances and a few nail polishes or lip glosses.
  2. Do have lots of books, and offer one to everyone you see. Don't forget your business cards also!
  3. Hand out samples with small "Need more?" stickers with your eStore address on them.
  4. Smile, be approachable, and talk to everyone who stops by. You never know what they might be looking for.
  5. Don't be "salesy," but be friendly. Get to know them. Answer their questions, offer anecdotes about the products.
  6. If they want a product you don't have on hand, offer to order it for them or direct them to your eStore.
  7. Remember, as Molly Stone-Bibb says, "Slow and steady wins the race." Concentrate on building relationships, and the money will follow. Just have fun with it!
