Seven Tips for Staying Young

Having just turned 62, my thoughts are on ways to retain my youth. Sixty is the new 40, right? Social Security? It’s not a sign of old age, it’s getting paid back for all those years you slaved at jobs you hated. It’s getting paid for doing what you want to do. And I’m all about that!

They say “You’re as young as you feel,” and there is a lot of truth in that. How many people do you know who look much older than they are? Or much younger? I’ve been blessed with good genes—I have very little gray hair and I’m told I look at least 10 years younger than I am—but there is so much more that goes into a youthful appearance and persona.

Here is my list of tips for staying youthful:
  1. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Then moisturize again. Don’t wait until you’re in your 40s to start taking care of your skin. It’s the only skin you’ll ever have, so you want to baby it. Start moisturizing in your teens, 20s at the latest. Even if you have oily skin, use a moisturizer formulated for your skin type. My skin has always been dry, even in my teens, so I’ve always used day creams and night creams. I had a boyfriend who laughed at me for using wrinkle cream in my 30s, but it has paid off.
  2. Find the joy in life. Don’t be a Negative Nancy. Nobody wants to be around a sourpuss who brings everyone else down. Frowning gives you wrinkles, didn’t your mother tell you that? Sure, you may have a bad day, or a bad month. Everybody does. But look around you; there are things to be happy about. You are alive; you are breathing. You are woman. You are strong. You got this. If you don’t like your situation, guess what? Change it. Get out of that situation. YOU are the only one in control of your life. You can do anything you put your mind to. Find a way. If you need help, ask for it. My idol, Audrey Hepburn, said, I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day, and I believe in miracles."
  3. Always look your best. Have you ever run out to the grocery store without makeup, in your old sweatpants, just to grab some milk? You know damn well what happens next. You run smack into your drop-dead gorgeous ex-boyfriend in the dairy aisle. Yes, it’s happened to me. Now that I am an Avon Lady, I never leave the house without putting on my full face and a decent outfit. It may be jeans and a t-shirt, but I still look put together. Looking my best gives me confidence, and confidence shows. Put your makeup on, and smile at everyone you make eye contact with. Smiling makes you beautiful.
  4. For the love of everything wonderful, don’t smoke. It makes your skin look like old shoe leather and causes those awful wrinkles around your lips. Oh, and it can kill you.
  5. If you drink, use moderation. A little red wine is good for your heart. A pint of tequila, not so much.
  6. Eat healthy. Avoid red meat and get lots of fruits and veggies in your diet.
  7. Stay active. Move, even if it’s just up and down the stairs in your house. Take a yoga class, walk the dog, join a gym.

I hope you found this helpful. You are beautiful, and you are truly as young as you feel!
